From Fiber to AI to TikTok LIVE: Why I Keep Building Infrastructure
By Bill Hynes · · 5 min read

People sometimes look at my career and see three different businesses: fiber, AI infrastructure, and TikTok LIVE. I see one idea, repeated.
Build the infrastructure first. The opportunity shows up after.
Fiber: the pipes come first
I started out building fiber and data infrastructure. Fiber taught me something early. Nobody gets excited about the conduit in the ground. But every streaming service, every cloud app, and every video call depends on it.
The people who own the infrastructure are not always the loudest names in tech. They are the ones everyone else relies on.
AI: power is the new fiber
Today, the same pattern is playing out in AI, just at a much bigger scale.
Everyone talks about chips. But chips will always be there. That market figures out supply and demand. What is truly scarce is power, land, and a workforce that can execute. That is why I founded United Fusion Digital, to build power-first AI infrastructure.
As I wrote recently, the race in AI infrastructure is no longer about who can buy chips. It is about who can energize megawatts first. Read the full piece on UFD.ai.
And there is an irony I think about a lot. It takes great people to build the sites that run AI, and AI will eliminate some jobs. But it will also create demand for others: electricians, technicians, engineers, and crews who can stand this infrastructure up. Infrastructure always needs people.
TikTok LIVE: a studio is infrastructure too
In April 2025, after racing at the Long Beach Grand Prix, I toured TikTok's offices in Los Angeles and saw a live shopping studio in action. My first thought was simple: we already have better infrastructure than this in York, Pennsylvania.
We had a 53,000 square foot campus with professional studios, built for production. So we did what I always do. We built a better mousetrap.
That became Think Loud Studios. We started TikTok Shop in June 2025. By September 2026, TikTok Shop's official partner leaderboard ranked Think Loud #5 in the US for LIVE, by GMV. Here is how we did it.
The short version: great sets, great hosts who know the product, and one studio that handles everything end to end. That is infrastructure, just a different kind.
Today Think Loud works with creators in 78 countries, and those creators have earned more than 600 million diamonds.
What ties it all together
Fiber, AI, and live commerce look nothing alike on the surface. Underneath, they follow the same rules:
- Control the hard assets. Land, power, studios, networks. The things that take years to build are the things that last.
- Own the execution. A plan is only as good as the team that delivers it. I would rather have a great crew than a great pitch deck.
- Build it once, then repeat it. A reference design for a data center site and a playbook for a LIVE set are the same idea: prove it, then scale it.
- Get there before the crowd. The best time to build infrastructure is before everyone agrees it is needed.
Why I keep building
I race trucks in Stadium Super Trucks and host the ThrillCast. Racing teaches you that the car, the crew, and the preparation matter more than the moment the green flag drops. Business works the same way.
The headlines go to whatever is hot this year. I would rather build the thing the headlines depend on.
That is what I am doing at United Fusion Digital and at Think Loud Studios. And I am just getting started.
